The purpose of this CD is to test the capabilities of a bootable SGI LiveCD that includes Xorg functionality to demonstrate the look and feel of an Xorg environment across several different SGI systems and configurations. Since this SGI X LiveCD is still an experimental test of Xorg functionality, there may exist within unknown bugs or other glitches. We therefore encourage users of this CD to report any problems, bugs, glitches or other flaws they encounter during its use. Additionally, if users have ideas for making this CD better, then those are also welcome. Also of note is that this CD doubles as an InstallCD for those systems that cannot boot into an Xorg environment. A stage3 tarball is available in the /stages folder that is built with gcc-4.1.1 and targetted for the MIPS-III ISA. A Portage snapshot dated October 2nd, 2006 is also available in the /snapshots folder. Those able to boot into the Xorg environment can also install a Gentoo system using these provided files; however, due to the resources consumed when running Xorg, this process can be slower than installing from the InstallCD. Bugs and Enhancements are to be submitted to the following bug: #150402, [TRACKER] Gentoo/MIPS X LiveCD RC6 Bugs, Suggestions, Feedback http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=150402 Supported systems (Currently): HW IP System Name CPU Kernel Notes --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IP22 SGI Indy R5000 2.6.17.10 Works IP22 SGI Indy, Indigo2 R4x00 2.6.17.10 Untested (no hardware) IP27 SGI Origin 200/2000 R10K, R12K 2.6.17.10 Untested (no hardware) IP28 SGI Indigo2 Impact R10000 2.6.17.10 Works (Unplugging serial cable can sometimes oops) IP30 SGI Octane R10K, R12K, R14K 2.6.17.10 Works IP32 SGI O2 R5000, RM5200 2.6.17.10 Works HOW TO BURN THE CD This CD image has only been tested to burn correctly on Linux systems using the `cdrecord` program. This image is not a traditional ISO9660 image. It is instead a partitioned disk image similar to SGI IRIX Install CDs. The kernels and arcload bootloader are stored in a special "Volume Header" partition, while the actual CD Filesystem is stored in a separate partition. Because of the unique construction of this CD, most Windows CD Burning programs are known to fail when burning this image. Before reporting bugs with the burning process, make sure it was burned with the `cdrecord` command. BOOTING To boot this CD, simply follow these steps: 1) Place the CD into the CD-ROM drive 2) Power on the system 3) Select Item #2, "Install System Software" 4) Confirm that the source is set to the local CD-ROM 5) Press enter to start Xorg Apps: Name Version ----------------------------------------------------------------- Aterm 0.4.2 audacious 1.1.2 aumix 2.8 Eterm 0.9.3 FreeCiv 2.0.8 Gaim 1.5.0 GDM 2.14.9 Gimp 2.2.12 gvim 7.0.17 Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7 Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 NMap 4.10 Pysol 4.82 rxvt 2.7.10 X-Chat 2.4.5 X-Mahjongg 3.7 X-screensaver 4.24 XFCE 4.2.3.2 XMMS 1.2.10 Xorg-X11 7.1 Xorg-Server 7.1 Xterm 218 Miscellaneous Packages: Name Version ----------------------------------------------------------------- bash 3.1_p16 dosfstools 2.11 e2fsprogs 1.39 elinks 0.11.1 ethtool 3 irssi 0.8.10 jfsutils 1.1.7 lsscsi 0.17 mdadm 2.5.2 minicom 2.1 mt-st 0.7 nano 1.3.11 openssl 0.9.7j pciutils 2.2.0 pork 0.99.8.1 portmap 5b ppp 2.4.3 reiserfsprogs 3.6.19 rp-pppoe 3.8 rpm2targz 9.0 samba 3.0.22 screen 4.0.2 sdparm 0.98 sudo 1.6.8_p9 tcl 8.4.9 tcpdump 3.9.4 unzip 5.52 usbutils 0.71 vim 7.0.17 xfsprogs 2.7.11 zip 2.31 Three systems for the X Kings under the GUI, Seven for the Console Lords in their halls of chrome, Nine for Normal Users doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord in his dark /home In the Land of Gentoo where the sources lie.
